The Metastasis-Prizes 2019 are handed over at the EACR (European Association of Cancer Research) – Conference: “Seed and Soil” in Berlin.

The awardees are:
Senior applicants: Berta Sanchez-Laorden, Instituto de Neurociencias CSIC-UMH, San Juan de Alicante, Spain
Lisa Sevenich, Institut für Tumorbiologie und Experimentelle Therapie, Frankfurt, Germany
Junior applicant: Francesco Baschieri, Gustave Roussy Institute, Villejuif, France.

The three prizewinners could present their projects to the audience.

GET TOGETHER IN VIENNA

As in 2012, 2014 and 2016 the “Friends of the Beug Foundation” (especially friends and colleagues of Hartmut Beug) meet at the “Alte AKH” in Vienna. The aims of the foundation and the recent awardees are presented and new activities are discussed.

The goal of this event is to keep the ties among the current “Friends of the Beug Foundation” and jointly spread the word of the foundation to attract further friends and supporters.

The foundation emphasizes their gratefulness for receiving further financial support and asks for continued donations.

IMP (Institut für Molekulare Pathologie) Opening Conference in Vienna
During this conference the Metastasis Prizes 2017 are handed out to Christian Braun, LMU (Ludwig-Maximilian Universität München) and Manuel Valiente, CNIO (Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas). Both present their projects to the participants of the conference:
Christian Braun: “Targeting the coordinated splicing of regulatory detained introns as a novel therapy of metastasis”
Manuel Valiente: “Altered brain vessels as a novel target in brain metastasis”

IMPORTANT PUBLICATION

The science magazine “Nature” publishes the recent results of Salvador Aznar’s metastasis project. Salvador Aznar (prize winner 2013) found, together with Gloria Pascal, that tumour cells are dependent on fat to start metastasis.

EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization) Symposium “Frontiers in Stemcells and Cancer” in Heidelberg
John Thomson and Karin de Visser are presented as this year’s award winners and receive the Metastasis prizes from the Beug Foundation.
Karin de Visser speaks about her project: “Fighting metastatic breast cancer with cancer immunotherapy”
John Thomson talks about: “Analysis of DNA modification profiles in matched primary and metastatic human kidney tumours.”

Nature – CNIO (Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas): Cancer Symposium on Frontiers in Tumour Heterogeneity and Plasticity, Madrid
The first Metastasis Prize of the Beug Foundation is handed out to Salvador Aznar Benitah, IRB (Institute for Research in Biomedicine, Barcelona) during the conference. Salvador Aznar is given 20 minutes to present his ideas and aims to the audience. The title of his project is: “Identifying and characterizing metastasis promoting cells in human squamous cell carcinomas in vivo.”
